"Hamas said it agreed to a cease-fire and hostage deal proposed by Egypt and Qatar Monday. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that deal did not meet “core demands.”
Israeli leaders say they will continue to negotiate while also pushing forward with military operations into the southern Gazan city of Rafah, despite opposition from the United States.
The White House says the cease-fire proposal is under review.
“We continue to believe that a hostage deal is in the best interests of the Israeli people,” said State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller. “It's in the best interest of the Palestinian people. It would bring an immediate cease-fire, it would allow increased movement of humanitarian assistance and so we're going to continue to work to try to reach one.”
