"CONCORD, N.H. —

The so-called ""gay panic"" defense is one step closer to being on its way out of New Hampshire after a House and Senate committee came up with a compromise on the bill.

Lawmakers voted to make some changes to the language after concerns were raised last week about unintended consequences.

""Ultimately, what this bill does is protect LGBTQ individuals from violence,"" said state Rep. Shaun Filiault, I-Keene.

The bill would prevent people accused of homicide from using the victim's gender identity or sexual orientation as a defense to bump it down to a manslaughter. Lawmakers met Thursday to work on the bill's language.
